Barcelona (ACN).- Altruism is growing in Catalonia. 2,049 persons applied to be a new bone marrow donor during 2011, an increase of 125% in this kind  of donations. 16,325 people, 17% of all donors in Spain, are registered at the Bone Marrow Donors Register of Barcelona (REDMO), which manages the Carreras Foundation. The data indicate that Catalonia has 216 donors per 100,000 inhabitants.

Bone marrow donors more than doubled last year in Catalonia. Besides the 2,409 new donors who joined the register, 9,640 were collected from umbilical cords as altruistic, and incorporated in the Catalan Blood and Tissue Bank, where the total number of high quality cord units is now at 15,414. These donations come from both the 43 maternity units authorized by the Catalan Department of Health and five other regions in Spain in
collaboration with the donors Bank of Barcelona.

In addition, REDMO has recorded 52,377 cord units stored in different banks with state authorization. They gave 309 units for transplantation, of which 67.4% came from the bank cord of Barcelona. The bank delivered 209 units of cord for transplantation, 65 of which were in Spain and 144 for foreign patients.
